The Great Debate: Fish Versus Shrimp Tacos

Posted on

Fish versus shrimp tacos—it’s a debate that has afflicted Californian minds and stomachs for centuries. Okay, maybe not centuries. However, as Mexican cuisine continues to mingle with the American spirit and what constitutes as “American cuisine,” fish and shrimp tacos have also grown in popularity. Unfortunately, with increased popularity, comes division. Though only recent, seafood lovers alike have positioned the two tasty taco variants against one another fueling a debate that is sure to carry on for years to come. Benny’s Tacos presents you with the battle of the ages: Fish versus Shrimp Tacos.

Pro Fish, Anti-Shrimp

Shrimp TacosNo matter how you cut it or what species of fish you use—tilapia, halibut, mahi-mahi, and the most preferred, cod—the result will be a damn good taco almost every time. When battered, deep fried, placed on a corn tortilla and topped with sour cream or any other of your favorite garnishes, devouring a good fish taco—or four— is an indulgent experience that is difficult to ruin. Of course, some species are preferred for making tacos over others, but the cooking ease of fish tends to make it a better choice over shrimp tacos.

Let’s face the facts—shrimp is a bottom feeder and can taste like one. This is especially true for a lot of store-bought shrimp which are often kept in a breeding farm. Once battered and fried, a bad fish can be masked—for the most part. But the same can’t be said for shrimp. These poppable crustaceans need to be prepared (and bought) with pride and care because they cannot afford the same margin of error as most fish.

Pro Shrimp, Anti-Fish

Shrimp TacosFinding high-quality shrimp may be difficult when your taco craving is through the roof, but the potential experience of a shrimp taco with good shrimp outweighs that of any fish taco all day, every day of the week. There are also different cooking methods that can be applied when making fish tacos. In addition to deep-frying, you can seer shrimp in a pan and douse your shrimp tacos with lime and a nice pico de gallo for a healthier touch. Sure you can take the same approach for fish and make blackened tilapia tacos, but they are not nearly as good as a nice crispy batter and soft flakey inside. With little-to-no other ways to make a good fish taco, the various cooking methods for shrimp can push customers toward shrimp tacos over fish.

So who won, fish or shrimp tacos?  We at Benny’s Tacos & Chicken Rotisserie are not going to reveal our preference, but throw your hat into the ring and decide for yourself. Head on over to Benny’s and try our delicious fish tacos from which you can choose between either grilled or fried Mexican bass, topped with a nice cabbage salad, avocado, pico de gallo and a spicy chipotle sauce. If you think you’re a shrimp type of person, we have a taco for you as well. With high-quality shrimp inside, our shrimp tacos are finished off by a roasted pineapple-jimaca salsa, lettuce and our signature chipotle sauce.

Roots of Cinco de Mayo

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with our authentic Mexican food! With two locations in West LA (Westchester and Santa Monica) we’re the perfect destination to fiesta. Mexican Independence Day, which people often confuse with Cinco de Mayo, is actually on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. Over the years it has turned into a celebration that includes parades, mariachi performances, and street festivals. Since LA is heavily diverse there will be plenty of places to commemorate the holiday. We at Benny’s Tacos cherish our Mexican heritage and want to offer a great dining experience for anyone looking to join in the festivities.

Celebrate With Our Menu

Our authentic Mexican food menu has traditional items that you’ll find at Cinco de Mayo celebrations like tacos, burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, nachos, and more. We also cook mouth watering rotisserie chicken (slow-cooked, hormone free, marinated with garlic and special herbs) that you can order whole, half, or quarter. Want it in a wrap? Our tasty chicken wrap comes in a fresh flour tortilla with lettuce, avocado, or guacamole, cheddar/jack, with chipotle sauce or sour cream.

Cinco de Mayo Special

Last year, we joined the rest of Los Angeles in the festivities, and celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a special, three tacos for $5.00. And because the special was a hit we wanted to celebrate with another special. This year we chose to do a special three fresh Baja Fish tacos, topped with avocado and chipotle sauce and a side of tortilla chips for $6.99. This year’s Cinco de Mayo special will not only be available for one day, but throughout the month of May.

So come out and celebrate with us. In Westchester we’re located at 7101 W. Manchester Avenue. In Santa Monica we’re located at 915 Wilshire Blvd. Can’t make it to Benny’s Tacos? Don’t forget we offer our authentic Mexican food in delicious platters with our professional catering services too!

There’s a school event and you need everyone fed. Maybe there’s a board meeting among teachers; classroom 7 scored the highest on their last test; the local baseball team hit the winning ball; or it’s just a fun gathering of coworkers. Whether it’s a business meeting or a celebration, you need to cater the event, and the tried and true method is pizza or sandwiches—they’re fast, cheap, and easy. Those foods also give the impression the main concern is keeping the guests full over actually providing a good meal.

Benny’s Tacos has catered hundreds of people in the L.A. school district; we’re more than happy to serve those who nurture the education system. We don’t talk down to our customers by cooking false Mexican food; everything on our menu is authentic. Alongside items such as special tacos, wet burritos, and carne asada plates, we also provide rotisserie chicken, seafood, and vegetarian options. In addition to schools, Benny’s Tacos has been called upon to cater for a number of corporations, including Google and Hulu. Our professionals can satisfy anyone, whether multimillion corporations or a classroom, by providing the best services possible.

We care about education and Benny’s Tacos has your school’s full support in providing excellent food for your event. Make that board meeting less stressful with some rotisserie chicken. Taco Tuesday

Posted on

Taco Tuesday has been tradition in California since the term was actually registered for a trademark in 1989 by a Mexican food chain called Taco John’s.  The phrase is actually trademarked in 49 states with exception to New Jersey, where the trademark is held by a hotel in a city called Somers Point.

In 2010, Taco John’s actually made it a point to enforce its “Taco Tuesday” trademark against a small taco restaurant in Oklahoma, which was met with much disdain by the frequent goers of “Taco Tuesdays” via social media.  Eventually, Taco John’s realized that the negative press that they were receiving by enforcing their trademark was not worth the hassle in the end and as a result, the widespread use of “Taco Tuesday” was born.

Today, many Mexican restaurants see Tuesdays as a day to upstream revenue and really sell their customers on a day where food is plentiful and cheap.  It’s actually quite common for Mexican restaurants to offer fish, steak, or chicken tacos at a low price.  However, what really sets Benny’s Tacos apart from the competition is one word: lobster.

You Can’t Beat Benny’s Fresh Lobster Tacos, Every Taco Tuesday

Benny’s Tacos offers high quality lobster tacos on Tuesdays with freshly handmade corn or flour tortillas along with a side of guacamole and freshly baked tortilla chips.  You actually get THREE lobster tacos for just $8.25 which equates to just under $2.75 per taco — and don’t forget about the guacamole and tortilla chips!  As a matter of fact, there are specials every single day of the week to accommodate your wallet and your pallet.

Don’t miss out next Tuesday on your chance to eat the freshest, most delicious lobster tacos you have ever experienced at a price you just can’t beat, and visit Benny’s Tacos for the next Taco Tuesday!
